1901 - 1950

 

 

1901        Rev. J. K. Young replaced Rev. D. Swart as Pastor  Camp Meetings were held from time to time.  The "Envelope System" was used to raise the Pastor's salary to $600.00 half of which was appropriated by the Conference.  Membership, which had gone as high as 184, dropped back to 86.

 

1903        Rev. F. C. Dissinger replaced Rev. J. K. Young as Pastor.  Membership went back up to 109.

 

1904        Rev. J. A. Spencer replaced Rev. F. C. Dissinger as Pastor.

 

1905        Rev. J. H. Tobias replaced Rev. J. A. Spencer as Pastor.  A "Jubilee" was held to celebrate the removal of the church debt.

 

1908         Rev. B. H. Hobbs replaced Rev. J. H. Tobias as Pastor.

 

1913         Rev. L. Hanne replaced Rev. B. H. Hobbs as Pastor. In March, the Conference changed Emmanuel's status from Abilene Mission to Abilene Charge. 

 

1915         Rev. H. E. Bower replaced Rev. L. Hanne as Pastor.

1917

          As membership continued to grow, a larger structure was needed.  The 1889 frame church and its parsonage was torn down to make room for a brick building, which cost about $20,000.00 to build. 

          Bishop Breyfogel attended the dedication in June.           

 

   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

            A portion of the materials from the old frame church were used to construct a parsonage, located at 315 NE Sixth.

 

 

 

 

 

1918     Rev. Ben Barthel replaced Rev. H. E. Bower as Pastor.  .  A pipe organ was added to the church.  It was one of the first in the city and a Mr. R. M. White donated $1,000.00 toward its purchase.

1920    Rev. M. C. Platz returned to Emmanuel, replacing Rev. Ben Barthel as Pastor.

1921          The 6th Street parsonage is sold.

 

1926    Rev. M. J. Steinmetz replaced Reverend M. C. Platz as Pastor.

 

1927   

 

Rev. E. H. Dahm replaced Rev. M. J. Steinmetz as Pastor. 

The parsonage at 207 NE 6th street was purchased for $6,500.00. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 1930          The Pastors' salary is raised to $1,600.00 

 1932          Church membership reaches 246.

 

1934    Rev. I. W. Gray replaced Rev. E. H. Dahm as Pastor since Rev. Daum had reached the 7 year limit.

 

1937    Rev. George Schrenk replaced Rev. I. W. Gray as Pastor.

 

1938   Rev. M. D. Landis replaced Rev. George Schrenk as Pastor.

 

1940   Rev. L. M. Nanninga replaced Rev. M. D. Landis as Pastor.

 

1942   Rev. C. O. Bickel replaced Rev. L. M. Nanninga as Pastor.

1946         The General Conference at Youngstown voted to unite the Evangelical Church with the United Brethren Church.  

1947           Encie Picking started a fund to enlarge the crowded Sunday School classrooms.    

 

1948   Rev. C. R. Platz replaced Rev. C. O. Bickel as Pastor.
